Catalyzing Climate Literacy

Driving Question

How can students catalyze local schools and districts to build strong climate education?

Overview

As members of the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District’s (LVJUSD) Climate Literacy Task Force (CLTF), interns and Quest advance climate education so that all students graduate climate literate, with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a changing world. The team is also working to support the adoption of a similar climate literacy resolution in Pleasanton Unified School District (PUSD).

Project Progression (2023-2026)

Launch and Policy Research
Students launched the Climate Literacy project through the Livermore Youth Climate Summit by researching local climate education policy, collecting student survey data, and engaging educators and school board members in LVJUSD.

Student Authored Resolution & Adoption
Using community input and student data, students refined and presented a student-authored climate literacy resolution that was unanimously adopted by LVJUSD.

Coalition Building & Expansion
While students began data collection for bringing a similar climate literacy resolution to PUSD, they deepened community engagement through art and shared their work at regional, state, and national conferences.

District Partnership & Implementation
As active members in LVJUSD’s Climate Literacy Task Force, students have begun designing pilot lessons to support classroom implementation, while presenting survey findings and draft resolutions in PUSD.
